Enterprise, The Phantom Menace, Prelude to Foundation, ...there are a lot of prequels that failed to live up to expectations. So are they always a bad idea? Are they doomed simply because we already know how they must end? If you're going to visit the past, is it better to retcon it (in the way that Genesis of the Daleks blithely contradicted pretty much the entire of the first Dalek story, to wonderful effect) and create something entirely new rather than to tie it to what we already know?
Can prequels work and what examples are there?

I hope not, otherwise I'll be disappointed by Caprica.
I'll have to think about it. _________________ "Blak" sheep of the B7 forum family! |

Being a Twin Peaks fan, I found Fire Walk With me to be a bit disappointing. _________________ "Blak" sheep of the B7 forum family! |

It's a very loose prequel isn't it? It doesn't have any real bearing that I can think of on the events of Raiders and can be enjoyed as a totally seperate movie. Maybe that's why it works? _________________ Everything in life is only for now. |

What about "Batman Begins"? That was the best Batman film up to that point, I reckon.... (haven't seen Dark Knight yet...) _________________

I think prequels are, generally, a good idea. However, every prequel I can think of is disappointing. Prequels seem to suffer from some type of poor execution, and an inevetable 'mis-match' with the original. Would like to think of a good one, but I can't. _________________ As I was saying, we all have to learn to live with disappointment |
