Let The Uncharted Territories Celebrations Begin!

Exclusive news from the Uncharted Territories. The consistent internet whispers of bringing Farscape back to our screens might just be true. Farscape was a science fiction television series that ran on the SyFy network (back then known as the SciFi Channel) from 1999-2003. Now it seems the cult favorite show of thousands of nerds worldwide will be getting a sequel!

Check below the cut for more details.

Farscape was created by Rockne S. O’Bannon (Defiance, Cult) and Brian Henson of Jim Henson Productions. It was a beautiful thing to behold. In its short four-year run, Farscape gave us all the weird, fantasy/sci-fi action and adventure a growing nerd needs to feed a starving imagination. It did this with a strong cast, solid mythology, excellent digital effects, and, perhaps most important, the puppets brought to life by the The Henson Company’s Creature Shop.

If.com recently dropped a story that Australian screenwriter, television producer, Justin Monjo, who’s a writer of more than a few Farscape episodes including one of my favorites “Crackers Don’t Matter,” was working on a Farscape screenplay.

The curiously small blurb regarding the movie reads as follows:

The prolific Monjo is also writing the screenplay for Farscape, a movie spin-off of the sci-fi series that ran on the Nine Network and the Sci-Fi Channel in the US, for Jim Henson Productions, to be directed by Brian Henson.
It’s funny how such a small paragraph can fill a fan’s heart with such glee. And here’s a hint at the sequel’s synopsis.

In the finale, the protagonists, American astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder) and peacekeeper Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) got married and had a baby. In the movie, it’s revealed the boy had special powers which made him the target of the villainous aliens so his parents hide him on Earth.
The plot follows the kid at the age of 19 when his whereabouts have been discovered and he rejoins his parents on their spaceship. Monjo says the film would be shot in Australia.

This setup definitely sounds like a way to generate interest in a Farscape: The Next Generation type of TV series or maybe a series of movies. Both ideas make me smile for days.

In the end, Farscape was struggling to stay on the air. After it was finally canceled, the fans got together to help to raise enough money to film Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. This miniseries was meant to answer for the frustrating series cliffhanger and tie-up a good portion of loose ends the series picked up during its four-year run. Remember that this happened a good decade before sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo began bringing fan-favored TV series back to life.

Then, in 2008, BOOM! Studios began producing a Farscape comic book series. These books are a direct continuation from The Peacekeeper Wars and continue John Crichton and Aeryn Sun’s journey as a new family. Most of the comics are now in trade paperback format and can be picked up at your favorite comics buying locations or online.

When the movie sequel finally hits the theaters, you can trust that I’ll be in that mid-row seat screaming at the screen, “About frelling time!”

There are 8 half hour audio drama's (old time radio style) called "Deck Gibson - Far Reach Commander" from 2007/2008. I mention it here because one of the things that influenced it apparently, was Farscape. Thought Farscape fans might like it; I certainly do. Here's the link to the webpage with the first two:

Deck Gibson and the Stardust Dancers is the first one. The other six are on the Season 3 page and all 8 can all be downloaded (mp3's)
