The character of Jenna was one that promised so much but in the end delivered so little. There she was, a smuggler and a pilot, and a woman on a prison ship full of men, yet one who was happy to hold her own and even risk the wrath of Raiker. We had hints early on that she had an attraction for Blake and then, to a lesser degree, for Cally. She spent the first season clearly second in command on the Liberator. The first season also included her best episode - Bounty - in which we got a glimpse of her past.
As the first season drew to an end, we saw an unexplained change in the command structure. In Deliverance, for no given reason, Avon is second in command though Jenna still gets a chance to be on the away party only to be captured by cavemen. By season two, we have the Blake and Avon show with the other characters supporting, including Jenna, who gets to be on teleport duty more than not. She did get to go down to the planet in Keeper, with embarrassing consequences.
When asked why she left the show, actress Sally Knyvette said she felt the character had become a clothes horse, and she has a point. She also compares her role to that of Signourey Weaver in Alien, which came out shortly afterwards, and said that her arse kicking character was really what Jenna should have become. If it had, she would probably have stayed.
So, from potentially dynamic character to decorative eye candy in two seasons. What a waste. _________________ --
